VI OF <br /> COUNTY OF HAWAII -•� %:*1:: STATE OF HAWAII <br /> 'f8.,.yam-�o+�'�. <br /> 4TE Of•4;:s <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 436 11 <br /> A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT <br /> AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A <br /> DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO MALAMA 0 PUNA TO <br /> ASSIST WITH EXPENSES FOR RESEARCH ON RAT LUNGWORM DISEASE. <br /> WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has been actively <br /> engaged in invasive species issues for over 20 years, and whose mission is to assure critical <br /> habitat for native species and open space through environmental education and advocacy; and <br /> WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna conducts educational outreach on rat lungworm disease <br /> and is a strong proponent for more research; and <br /> WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna is now collaborating with the U.S. Department of <br /> Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA-APHIS) and Susan Jarvi, <br /> Ph.D., a professor and lead researcher on rat lungworm disease at the Daniel K. Inouye College <br /> of Pharmacy at the University of Hawai`i at Hilo, to ensure that research continues on a <br /> vegetable wash that may reduce the risk of contracting rat lungworm disease; and <br /> WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna is requesting funds to pay for the services of a laboratory <br /> technician and to purchase supplies required to conduct a viability bioassay study in rats, which <br /> will lay the necessary groundwork to effectively combat rat lungworm disease; and <br /> WHEREAS, one of the program objectives of the Department of Research and <br /> Development is to support invasive species research and education, such as the ongoing research <br /> and education to address rat lungworm disease; and <br /> WHEREAS,pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(A) of the Hawai`i County Code, <br /> Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via <br /> resolution identifying the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event, <br /> activity, service, equipment, materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now, <br /> therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that <br /> Contingency Relief funds from Council District 6 will be appropriated to the Department of <br /> Research and Development to provide a grant to Malama 0 Puna for research on rat lungworm <br /> disease. <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the County of Hawai`i hereby <br /> transfers/appropriates the following amount as set forth below: <br />
