COUNTY OF HAWAII - +. <br /> , '=�• _• STATE OF HAWAII <br /> • <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 465 IS <br /> A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT <br /> AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A <br /> DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO THE HAWAII <br /> JAPANESE CENTER FOR PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTATION EXPENSES TO <br /> COMMEMORATE THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ARRIVAL OF THE FIRST <br /> JAPANESE IMMIGRANTS TO HAWAII. <br /> WHEREAS,the Hawai`i Japanese Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that <br /> serves as a cultural, research, and educational center for the community, and as a resource for <br /> people of all ages and backgrounds to learn about the sacrifices and contributions that <br /> immigrants from Japan and elsewhere made to Hawai`i; and <br /> WHEREAS, the first Japanese immigrants to Hawai`i arrived at Honolulu Harbor on <br /> June 20, 1868, aboard the vessel Scioto, and became known as the "gannenmono," or"first year <br /> men,"because they worked in the first year of the Meiji era; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Hawai`i Japanese Center has been planning to commemorate 2018, the <br /> 150th anniversary year of the arrival of the gannenmono, with cultural and educational events <br /> including a visit from the Japanese training ship Nippon Maru, a shamisen concert, and a <br /> Hawai`i-Japan hula performance; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Hawai`i Japanese Center has requested funds to purchase educational <br /> materials, flyers for public outreach and information, brochures, and other miscellaneous items <br /> for the planning and implementation of these events; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Department of Parks and Recreation supports activities and programs <br /> that promote culture, art, history, and the humanities; and <br /> WHEREAS,pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(A) of the Hawai`i County Code, <br /> Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via <br /> resolution identifying the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event, <br /> activity, service, equipment, materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now, <br /> therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that <br /> Contingency Relief funds from Council District 3 will be appropriated to the Department of <br /> Parks and Recreation to provide a grant to the Hawai`i Japanese Center for planning and <br /> implementation expenses to commemorate the 150th anniversaryof the arrival of the first <br /> P p <br /> Japanese immigrants to Hawai`i. <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the County of Hawaii hereby <br /> transfers/appropriates the following amount as set forth below: <br />
