COUNTY OF HAWAII `_4 ='';= / STATE OF HAWAII <br /> Pp OF•Np`I . <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 638 18 <br /> A RESOLUTION TO EXPAND ALLOWABLE EXPENDITURES AUTHORIZED IN A <br /> PREVIOUSLY APPROVED CONTINGENCY RELIEF FUND TRANSFER FROM <br /> COUNCIL DISTRICT 4 TO THE DEPARTMENT OF RESEARCH AND <br /> DEVELOPMENT,WHICH AWARDED A $2,600 GRANT TO MALAMA 0 PUNA FOR <br /> A FERAL PIG TRAPPING PROGRAM. <br /> WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna is a 501(c)(3) environmental nonprofit organization that <br /> supports efforts to eradicate or manage invasive species and promote agricultural sustainability <br /> in Puna; and <br /> WHEREAS, on April 25, 2018, the Council adopted Resolution No. 566-18, which <br /> transferred Contingency Relief funds from Council District 4 to the Department of Research and <br /> Development to provide a$2,600 grant to Malama 0 Puna to assist the Hawai`i Papaya Industry <br /> Association(HPIA) with its feral pig trapping program; and <br /> WHEREAS, since May 3, 2018, thousands of acres of papaya fields have been inundated <br /> by lava or rendered inaccessible due to road closures, crippling the papaya industry on Hawai`i <br /> Island; and <br /> WHEREAS, HPIA members are working to relocate, plant, and protect new seed crops <br /> to rebuild the papaya industry; and <br /> WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna, on behalf of HPIA, is requesting that previously • <br /> transferred Contingency Relief funds from Council District 4, which is to be used for pig <br /> trapping, also be used to purchase fencing materials to mitigate crop damage and protect new <br /> papaya crops from feral pigs; now, therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that <br /> Contingency Relief funds from Council District 4, previously transferred via Resolution <br /> No. 566-18, be used to purchase materials for both pig trapping and fencing to mitigate the <br /> destruction and damage of papaya crops caused by feral pigs. <br />
