REPORT OF THE
COMMITTEE ON FINANCE
DATE: September 18, 2018 Re: Comm. No. 1055/Res. No. 679-18
PLACE: Council Chambers
Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i
TIME: 1:45 p.m.
Council Chair and Members
Hawai`i County Council
Hilo, Hawai`i 96720
Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Resolution No. 679-18, reports as follows:
Resolution No. 679-18, transmitted by Finance Director Deanna S. Sako, via Communication
No. 1055 dated August 30, 2018, authorizes the acceptance of a donation of two buses from the
Maui County Department of Transportation.
This resolution accepts a 2004 ADI double-decker bus and a 2014 Chevrolet bus, which would
be used by the Mass Transit Agency to provide island-wide transportation.
Council Member Dru Mamo Kanuha inquired about the reason for the donation of these two
buses from Maui County, the working condition of the buses, and the amount Hawai`i County
paid for shipping.
Tiffany Kai, Mass Transit Program Manager, explained the cost to the County to bring the buses
over was $11,177. Ms. Kai stated that the 2014 Chevy mini bus was retired but is still in good
condition. The 2004 double-decker bus was not very useful in Maui because it was difficult to
maneuver in many areas. Ms. Kai also explained that the plan is to use the double-decker bus in
Hilo and South Kohala, which will then free up two buses. The smaller bus will be used on
some Puna routes. Both buses are being looked over by mechanics to make sure they are ready
for the road.
Your Committee on Finance is in accord with the purpose and intent of Resolution No. 679-18,
and recommends its adoption.
dmm
AYES NOES ABS EX Respectfully submitted,
CHUNG X
DAVID x COMMITTEE ON FINANCE
EOFF X
KANUHA X Addirrg'
LEE LOY Xj
O'HARA X .. "IL
,-
POINDEXTER x MAILE DAVID, CHAIR
RICHARDS X FC REPORT NO.: 139
RUGGLES X ADOPTED: OCT 0 3 2018
