COUNTY OF HAWAII STATE OF HAWAFI RESOLUTION NO. 708 IS A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO THE HILO HAMAKUA COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION TO ASSIST WITH EXPENSES RELATED TO THE SAKADA DAY CELEBRATION 2018. WHEREAS, the Hilo Hamdkua Community Development Corporation (HHCDC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to assist in creating opportunities that preserve the environment, sustain families, and improve the quality of life of residents; and WHEREAS, the Sakada Day Celebration 2018 will be held on December 16, 2018, to honor the legacy of 125,000 sugar and pineapple plantation laborers recruited from the Philippines between 1906 and 1946 by the Hawaii Sugar Planters Association, acknowledging the Sakadas contribution to Hawai`i's economy, society, and culture; and WHEREAS, one of the goals of the Department of Research and Development is to support sustainable agricultural practices by promoting educational opportunities designed to build skills and capacity in the farming community and to support local, national, and international promotion of locally produced agricultural products; and WHEREAS, HHCDC is working with the Sakada Day organizers to coordinate this event and is requesting funds for food, refreshments, materials, and supplies for activities, demonstrations, and workshops for the Sakada Day Celebration 2018; and WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(A) of the Hawaii County Code, Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via resolution identifying the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event, activity, service, equipment, materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that Contingency Relief funds from Council District 7 will be appropriated to the Department of Research and Development to provide a grant to Hilo Hamdkua Community Development Corporation for expenses related to the Sakada Day Celebration 2018. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the County of Hawaii hereby transfers/appropriates the following amount as set forth below:
