V OF i4 <br />� <br />COUNTY OF HAWAII STATE OF HAWAII <br />1TE OF-NF•'P , <br />RESOLUTION NO. 749 IS <br />A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT <br />AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A <br />DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO THE HILO-HAMAKUA <br />COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION TO ASSIST WITH EXPENSES <br />RELATED TO THE SAKADA DAY CELEBRATION 2018. <br />WHEREAS, the Hilo-Hamakua Community Development Corporation is a 501(c)(3) <br />nonprofit organization whose mission is to serve as a resource and assist residents of the <br />Hilo/Hamakua coast in community based and environmentally sound economic development <br />opportunities; and <br />WHEREAS, the Honorable Governor David Y. Ige signed into law HB604 dedicating <br />December 20th as Sakada Day, providing a formal recognition of this very important part of the <br />Filipino community; and <br />WHEREAS, this year's Sakada Day celebration will be held at the Kulaimano <br />Community Center in Pepe`ekeo on December 16, 2018, to honor the legacy of some 125,000 <br />sugar and pineapple plantation laborers recruited from the Philippines between 1906 and 1946 by <br />the Hawaii Sugar Planters Association, acknowledging the Sakadas contribution to Hawai`i's <br />economy, society, and culture of those sugar plantation workers from the Hamakua District; and <br />WHEREAS, the Hilo-Hdinakua Community Development Corporation is working with <br />the Sakada Day group to coordinate this event and is requesting funds for event program <br />expenses for the Sakada Day celebration; and <br />WHEREAS, one of the goals of the Department of Research and Development is to <br />support sustainable agricultural practices by promoting educational opportunities designed to <br />build skills and capacity in the farming community and to support local, national, and <br />international promotion of locally produced agricultural products; and <br />WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(A) of the Hawaii County Code, <br />Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via <br />resolution identifying the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event, <br />activity, service, equipment, materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now, <br />therefore, <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that <br />Contingency Relief funds from Council District 2 will be appropriated to the Department of <br />Research and Development to provide a grant to Hilo-Hamakua Community Development <br />Corporation for expenses related to the Sakada Day Celebration 2018. <br />
