tP'L q <br /> I of <br /> COUNTY OF HAWAII STATE OF HAWAIII <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 205 19 <br /> A RESOLUTION URGING THE ADMINISTRATION TO ACQUIRE HYDROGEN- <br /> POWERED BUSES FOR THE MASS TRANSIT AGENCY TO INCREASE THE USE OF <br /> CLEAN ENERGY. <br /> WHEREAS, in 2008,the State of Hawaii partnered with the U.S. Department of Energy <br /> to launch the Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative (HCEI)to reduce Hawai`i's dependence on <br /> imported fossil fuels; and <br /> WHEREAS,the HCEI has set goals to produce 70 percent of the State's energy needs <br /> 4 <br /> from energy-efficient and renewable sources by 2030 and be 100 percent independent from <br /> imported fuel by 2045; and <br /> WHEREAS,utilizing hydrogen as a replacement energy source for our public <br /> transportation would accelerate achieving our clean energy goals; and <br /> WHEREAS, hydrogen fuel cell technology fits Hawai`i's needs for sustainable energy <br /> while creating economic opportunities; and <br /> WHEREAS,the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute reports that the first publicly operated <br /> Zero Emission Bus system in Hawaii is nearing completion at the Natural Energy Laboratory <br /> Hawaii Authority campus and will soon be operated by the County of Hawaii Hele-On bus <br /> program, indicating that the technology,hydrogen production, fueling station, and personnel are <br /> already in place for future hydrogen buses; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Hawaii Renewable Hydrogen Program under Section 196-10(8) of the <br /> Hawaii Revised Statutes states that, "There is established, within the department of business, <br /> t <br /> economic development, and tourism, a Hawaii renewable hydrogen program to manage the <br /> State's transition to a renewable hydrogen economy. The program shall design, implement, and <br /> administer activities that include: a plan, for implementation during the years 2010 to 2020,to <br /> transition the island of Hawaii to a hydrogen-fueled economy and to extend the application of <br /> the plan throughout the State;" and <br /> r <br /> WHEREAS, Resolution No. 238-06, Draft 2, was adopted on February 1, 2006, as an <br /> effort to increase the use of high energy-efficient vehicles and save County funds by requesting <br /> the Department of Finance to study the procurement of high energy-efficient alternative fuel <br /> vehicles as part of its annual vehicle acquisition plans; now,therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it <br /> urges the Administration to acquire hydrogen-powered buses for the Mass Transit Agency to <br /> increase the use of clean to energy. <br />
