-'�YY of pt' <br /> COUNTY OF HAWAII + ---.S�'�/ STATE OF HAWAII <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 375 19 <br /> A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT <br /> AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A <br /> DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO HUA 0 LAHUI FOR <br /> EXPENSES RELATED TO CREATING A REPLICA OF A CANOE GIFTED TO THE <br /> SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION BY QUEEN KAPI`OLANI IN 1887. <br /> WHEREAS, Hua 0 Lahui is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is dedicated to the <br /> betterment of Native Hawaiians and our island community through education, culture, economic <br /> opportunities, and healthy lifestyles; and <br /> WHEREAS, a wa`a, or canoe, carved from a single log was gifted to the Smithsonian <br /> Institution by Queen Kapi`olani in 1887, and Hua 0 Lahui is supporting the efforts to educate <br /> future generations of this master skill and Hawaiian history through the creation of a replica <br /> canoe and hands-on participation; and <br /> WHEREAS, Hua 0 Lahui has secured the opportunity for its carving demonstration and <br /> public participation during the 2020 Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo and at the 2020 Festival of <br /> Pacific Arts and Culture (the Olympics of culture and arts) on O`ahu; and <br /> WHEREAS, Hua 0 Lahui has requested financial assistance for this carving project, <br /> including expenses for advertisements and shipping the canoe and tools to and from Oahu; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Department of Research and Development supports this project as it <br /> increases the economic contribution of our visitor industry to Hawaii Island, promotes quality <br /> experiences for visitors, and enriches the quality of life for Hawai`i residents; and <br /> WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(A) of the Hawai`i County Code, <br /> Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via <br /> resolution identifying the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event, <br /> activity, service, equipment, materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now, <br /> therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that <br /> Contingency Relief funds from Council District 9 will be appropriated to the Department of <br /> Research and Development to provide a grant to Hua 0 Lahui for expenses related to creating a <br /> replica of a canoe gifted to the Smithsonian Institution by Queen Kapi`olani in 1887. <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the County of Hawai`i hereby <br /> transfers/appropriates the following amount as set forth below: <br />
