k,'. <br /> COUNTY OF HAWAII STATE OF HAWAII <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 394 19 <br /> A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT <br /> AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A <br /> DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVDE A GRANT TO MALAMA 0 PUNA TO <br /> ASSIST WITH EXPENSES ASSOCIATED WITH THE 6TH INTERNATIONAL <br /> SCIENTIFIC WORKSHOP ON RAT LUNGWORM DISEASE. <br /> WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna is a 501(c)(3) local nonprofit whose purpose is to assure <br /> critical habitat for native species and open space for future generations; and <br /> WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna, partnering with the University of Hawai`i at Hilo, is <br /> hosting a free workshop on rat lungworm disease, which will be held on January 5-8, 2020, at the <br /> Hilo Hawaiian Hotel to increase awareness and prevention; and <br /> WHEREAS, rat lungworm is a disease caused by the ingestion of a parasite, often passed <br /> from snails or slugs, which can affect the brain and spinal cord and lead to severe headaches, <br /> neck stiffness, temporary paralysis, and sometimes even death; and <br /> WHEREAS, rat lungworm disease is negatively impacting the local economy due to the <br /> lack of reliable information available for residents and visitors, which has left many weary of <br /> purchasing and consuming locally grown vegetables; and <br /> WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna is requesting funds for conference bags, educational <br /> materials, poster-board session materials, and venue for the 6th International Scientific Workshop <br /> on Rat Lungworm Disease; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Department of Research and Development supports sustainable <br /> agriculture practices by promoting educational opportunities designed to build skills and capacity <br /> in the farming community; and <br /> WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(A) of the Hawai`i County Code, <br /> Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via <br /> resolution identifying the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event, <br /> activity, service, equipment, materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now, <br /> therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that <br /> Contingency Relief funds from Council District 6 will be appropriated to the Department of <br /> Research and Development to provide a grant to Malama 0 Puna to assist with expenses <br /> associated with hosting the 6th International Scientific Workshop on Rat Lungworm Disease. <br />
