No. 652 <br /> PLACE: Council Chambers <br /> Kailua-Kona, Hawaii <br /> TIME: 1:05 p.m. <br /> Council Chair and Members <br /> Hawaii County Council <br /> Hilo, Hawaii 96720 = <br /> 1 <br /> Your Committee on Planning, to which was referred Communication No. 652, reports as <br /> follows: <br /> Communication No. 652, dated November 29, 2019, and transmitted by Mayor Harry Kim, <br /> nominates Scott H. Mahoney of Council District 9 to the Hawaii County Cultural Resources <br /> Commission(CRC). <br /> Speaking from Hilo, Rose Bautista, Executive Assistant to Mayor Kim, introduced the nominee. <br /> She told your Committee that Mr. Mahoney retired from Environet, Inc., in Waimea, as an <br /> Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) Technician. He lives on the Waimea Hawaiian Homestead,where <br /> he also owns a flower farm. Mr. Mahoney is not a member of any political party. If confirmed, <br /> he would serve a term to end December 31, 2022. <br /> Addressing your Committee by videoconference from Waimea, Mr. Mahoney said he was <br /> grateful for the nomination, and that he looked forward to the opportunity to serve. <br /> Council Member Tim Richards asked about his background work on UXO. Mr. Mahoney said he <br /> started on Kaho`olawe and continued with private contractors. <br /> Council Member Matt Kaneali`i-Kleinfelder said the Cultural Resource Commission has a very <br /> important part to play. He was looking forward to hearing the decisions that he will be making <br /> on this commission, especially in regards to how we restore and rehabilitate historic properties. <br /> Mr. Mahoney said he was involved with a group in Ka`u, where they are trying to keep a lot of <br /> the sites protected. His expertise is mostly hands-on; they work with na lo`i (irrigated terraces, <br /> especially for taro) and the fishponds, and I'm also involved with an ahupua`a group from mauka <br /> to makai. He said he takes this nomination seriously and hopes he can be a benefit.
