J��Y OF M,• <br /> . • <br /> .... .-->Nt� <br /> COUNTY OF HAWAII ,,, A`�•'',=-'•17 - STATE OF HAWAII <br /> ... yi <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 486 20 <br /> A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT <br /> AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A <br /> DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO MALAMA 0 PUNA FOR <br /> A REIMBURSEMENT OF EXPENSES RELATING TO THE 6th INTERNATIONAL <br /> SCIENTIFIC WORKSHOP ON RAT LUNGWORM DISEASE. <br /> WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that focuses on the <br /> environment through education, hands-on projects, advocacy, watchdogging, and land <br /> conservation; and <br /> WHEREAS, rat lungworm, Angiostrongylus cantonensis, is a disease caused by a <br /> parasitic nematode that affects the brain and spinal cord, which can progress to a form of <br /> meningitis in more severe cases, and is negatively impacting public health, agriculture, and <br /> tourism on Hawai`i Island; and <br /> WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna, in collaboration with the University of Hawai`i at Hilo, <br /> Hawaii State Department of Health, Hawai`i IDeA (Institutional Development Award) <br /> Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE), and Hilo Medical Center, among others, <br /> hosted the 6th International Scientific Workshop on Rat Lungworm Disease in Hilo to share in <br /> the latest research and seek solutions to proactively address the treatment and spread of the <br /> disease; and <br /> WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna is seeking funds to reimburse expenses associated with <br /> hosting the workshop, including venue rental, accommodations for guest presenters, conference <br /> materials, and giveaways; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Department of Research and Development provides proactive leadership <br /> to enhance the quality of life and sustainability of Hawai`i Island through programs related to <br /> agriculture, energy, tourism, economic development, community development, and film; and <br /> WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(A) of the Hawaii County Code, <br /> Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via <br /> resolution identifying the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event, <br /> activity, service, equipment, materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now, <br /> therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that <br /> Contingency Relief funds from Council District 4 will be appropriated to the Department of <br /> Research and Development to provide a grant to Malama 0 Puna for a reimbursement of <br /> expenses associated with the 6th International Scientific Workshop on Rat Lungworm Disease. <br />
