My name is Shelby <br />4 <br />Nahale-a. I'm the chair of the Hawai ʻ i County Liquor <br />5 <br />Commission. <br />6 <br />I appreciate the tough decisions that you all <br />7 <br />have had to make in the last year due to years of <br />8 <br />inaction on the matter of salary adjustments and your <br />9 <br />current plan to stay ahead of future salary <br />10 <br />adjustments. <br />11 <br />I'd like to give you a little bit of <br />12 <br />background on our department first. We are one of only <br />13 <br />two County departments that are self-funded. We do not <br />14 <br />use any County general revenues to fund our operations. <br />15 <br />Our funds are generated by assessing percentage fees <br />16 <br />from our liquor licenses to cover the costs of running <br />17 <br />the department. The Liquor Commission, similar to you, <br />18 <br />consists of nine commissioners from each of the council <br />19 <br />districts, and it's charged with the overall <br />20 <br />responsibilities of granting or denying liquor licenses <br />21 <br />within the County. And for the purposes of this <br />22 <br />meeting, we are also in charge of selection or <br />23 <br />dismissal of our director. Our director is responsible <br />24 <br />for the overall operations of our department, which <br />25 <br />currently has 20 employees.
