Okay? If <br />5 <br />that's all right, then we'll modify the agenda and <br />6 <br />we'll start with the presentation from Greg Henkel, the <br />7 <br />chair of the Fire Commission. <br />8 <br />MR. HENKEL: Good morning, Commissioners. My <br />9 <br />name is Greg Henkel. I chair the Hawai ʻ i County Fire <br />10 <br />Commission. (SEE ATT. H.) <br />11 <br />At our last meeting, we discussed the <br />12 <br />proposal you have before you. Some of the things we <br />13 <br />discussed were, because of collective bargaining, some <br />14 <br />of the subordinates of the fire chief make more money <br />15 <br />than the fire chief and this is not unusual in some of <br />16 <br />the county departments. It can be a problem where <br />17 <br />qualified individuals are hesitant to advance within <br />18 <br />the department because they would have to take a pay <br />19 <br />cut, you know, to take a leadership position; but then <br />20 <br />it's also mentioned that the motivation to lead the <br />21 <br />department should be more than monetary, and the <br />22 <br />leaders of the department, you know, don't always weigh <br />23 <br />that much on the money they make. <br />24 <br />The events of last summer -- I live in lower <br />25 <br />Puna -- personally, I feel the fire department, the <br /> <br />ISLAND COURT REPORTING & TRANSCRIPTION SERVICES <br />(808) 933-9800 <br /> <br />
