If our property tax rates and assessment <br />3 <br />policies were putting people in the poorhouse, I'd be <br />4 <br />the first to scream. I'm proud of the fact that this <br />5 <br />County, in weighing property tax increase, made a <br />6 <br />commitment not -- to homeowners -- because we cannot <br />7 <br />tax people out of their home. I'm real proud of the <br />8 <br />principle of the older you get, the less tax you pay <br />9 <br />based on the principle that your income is fixed, et <br />10 <br />cetera, et cetera. <br />11 <br />And so, in regards to where you say we're <br />12 <br />headed -- that's all of the reasons why this <br />13 <br />administration pushed very heavily on the general <br />14 <br />excise tax. We had to stop using the County property <br />15 <br />tax as our sole source of revenue or only controlled <br />16 <br />revenue -- and that was a long battle -- and I thank <br />17 <br />the council for supporting that and the public for <br />18 <br />supporting that. What that did was give us, in round <br />19 <br />numbers with the G.E.T., as another source of revenue, <br />20 <br />the only other source of revenue we control. Gives us <br />21 <br />approximately, round numbers, at a year's time, which <br />22 <br />we'll see for next fiscal year, about 50 million <br />23 <br />dollars or so. Imagine if we had to raise that amount <br />24 <br />of money on your property tax.
