Box 2048 <br /> Pahoa, HI 96778-2048 <br /> Dear Joyce and Greg, <br /> Thank you for your letter of July 10, 2019 in which you ask that the opening <br /> hours for Pohoiki Beach Park be extended to 7:00 p.m. <br /> According to our Parks and Recreation staff, the issue would be about having the <br /> park be open with the Ocean Safety Officers are not on duty. The lifeguards are on <br /> duty 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. when the park is open. Pohoiki Beach Park has probably <br /> the most dangerous beach break on the Island, and the lifeguards definitely earn their <br /> pay at this beach during opening hours. I do not believe it would be reasonable to ask <br /> them to work an extra hour every day. <br /> I'm sure you understand that due to the hazardous conditions, we could not keep <br /> the park open without lifeguards on duty. <br /> Thank you for taking the time to write to me.
