CIVIL DEFENSE AGENCY ILTA 1411Y IIJ7_ Incident: Wind Advisory and High Surf Advisory Rev. May 6, 2019 Date: February 13, 2020 Time: 11 AM Frequency: Every 3 Hours Update #: 1 This is a Civil Defense Wind Advisory message for Thursday, February 13th at 1 in the afternoon. The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory for the interior areas of Hawaii Island and the Summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea until this evening. Winds are forecast for elevations between 5,000 and 8,000 feet to be 20 to 35 MPH with gusts of 50 MPH. Winds at the summits are forecast to be 35 to 50 MPH with gusts of 65 MPH. Due to the Wind Advisory, please take the following precautions; • Down slope winds on Saddle Road, in Waikoloa, and in Kawaihae could become higher than normal. • Secure outdoor items that could be affected by wind. • Be aware that downed trees, power disruptions, and road closures may occur without notice. Also, the National Weather Service has issued a High Surf Advisory for east facing shores of Hawaii Island for North Kohala, Hamakua, Hilo, Puna, and Kau District through tomorrow. A High Surf Advisory means surf will be higher than normal, shore break, and dangerous currents could cause injury or death. Due to the High Surf Advisory, the following are in effect; • Expect strong breaking waves, shore break, and rip currents making swimming difficult and dangerous. • Beach -goers, swimmers, and surfers should heed all advice given by ocean safety officials and exercise caution.
