Hawaii Game Management Advisory Commission Meeting <br />Minutes – January 14, 2020 <br />season – they’re expensive cameras – but I f you steal ‘em you cannot use <br />‘em so it’s kind of pointless if you steal ‘em – they’re locked. <br /> <br />AA: So up on Mauna Kea is this – how much different units is that or is that just <br />one hunting unit? <br /> <br />KS: On Mauna Kea we walked through Hunting Unit A into Hunting Unit G. But <br />the data was put together in just one data set. <br /> <br />AA: That’s just 2 units? <br /> <br />KS: Yeah. <br /> <br />NP: So, um, generally, ah, bird hunters are complaining that the population of <br />game birds are down. Is there any research into reasons why the game bird <br />populations are down? <br /> <br />KS: We haven’t done anything yet. I know I’ve been talking story with Brian over <br />at PTA. I know he was doing a crop analysis to see if there’s something with <br />their diet – but we haven’t – we’re just getting started on how many is there <br />and answering questions about why we’re not there yet. <br /> <br />NP: I mean that – they’re all birds, um, the palila are declining for no explainable <br />reason and the game birds are declining for no explainable reason. It seems <br />like research should go into why birds are declining in general. I don’t know... <br />It just seems to me a parallel, right? <br /> <br />KS: Well, there are different birds... <br /> <br />NP: Of course... They’re really different... <br /> <br />KS: ....that fill different ridges, that, yeah, they eat different things, they behave <br />very differently, um, but, I mean, yeah. <br /> <br />NP: Yeah, what, you know what – just a curious thing, you know, right? Cause it’s <br />a parallel? <br /> <br />KS: Yeah, it’s something I’m interested in – it took a lot of man hours to do this <br />one. We’ll see how many man hours it takes to do that question. <br /> <br />NP: Yeah, but I was just wondering if any funds would be dedicated to <br />researching into the cause. <br /> <br />KS: Yeah, I’ll put in a – we need to request it and we need to have a question that <br />we want to answer and a way to answer that question and so it’s something <br />13 <br /> <br /> <br />
