However, of note, slightly <br />lower shares of respondents identified familial status and marital status as protected classes <br />(78.8% and 69.7% respectively; as compared to the 97% who identified race/ethnicity and sex as <br />protected classes). This suggests that more awareness could be brought to protections according <br />to familial and marital status. <br />However, many also identified groups not protected by fair housing law as being covered under <br />the act. For example, sizeable shares stated that it was a violation to discriminate on the basis of <br />income (over 30%) and criminal records (over 21%). While there are many nuances in fair <br />housing, these factors represent mechanisms by which landlords and housing agencies can <br />13 <br />
