County of Hawai'i Draft General Plan
2019 Public Comments on Community Placemaking
Comment Source Date
• Fire and emergency, have you considered charging people in a self-
inflicted situation? Like guy on Mauna Kea who went in a closed area, Hilo Speakout 8/11/2019
got lost, caused 6-8 hour rescue. A waste of resources. If it's 100%
preventable by your specific action.
• Sometimes it's big money that wants to change the land use for
profit and it doesn't help the community (land use?) Hilo Speakout 8/11/2019
• (2 people) We don't need to subdivide any more. I don't want to
see Southern California housing development. We can't do that (land Hilo Speakout 8/11/2019
use?)
• So much money coming from the mainland, it's moving out the
people. A lot of population growth is people from other islands who Hilo Speakout 8/11/2019
can't afford to stay. $22 breakfast in Hilo isn't sustainable either.
Kaua'i is a traffic jam and rent isn't affordable. Maui shocked me.
• (2 people)This is awesome when I think of all the meetings I've
attended. Now let's hope they implement it(general?) Hilo Speakout 8/11/2019
• (2 people) If correctional facilities are outsourced, they'll only do
Hilo Speakout 8/11/2019
what they're paid to do. We should use best practices
• (2 people) Another part is reducing who is incarcerated, ex
decriminalizing marijuana Hilo Speakout 8/11/2019
• Classify properties properly (land use?) Hilo Speakout 8/11/2019
• The original gathering spaces like stores are no longer in Hamakua Hilo Speakout 8/11/2019
but the County facilities serve as those gathering spaces
• The ones with greatest need couldn't be here today or at CDP Hilo Speakout 8/11/2019
meetings. They're not heard. They don't have internet. (general?)
• Island wide, many people are on catchment. They cannot meet
fire code standards for businesses in their homes or communities. It's
costly and not practical for County to deliver level of service/fire Hilo Speakout 8/11/2019
hydrants in subdivisions. So consider policy change to allow very small
businesses to work on site on rural parcels with minimal fire
mitigation codes. (i.e., dedicated catchment tank for fire use, the size
of which is determined by builders sq. ft.) (econ?)
14
