<br /> <br />DIRECTOR’S INFORMATIONAL REPORT <br />TO THE ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT COMMISSION <br /> <br />SEPTEMBER 23, 2020 <br /> <br />CURRENT LEGISLATION <br /> <br />None. <br /> <br />DIRECTOR’S INFORMATIONAL UPDATES <br /> <br />As the director is not available for the commission’s September 23, 2020, meeting, his updates <br />are being postponed. <br /> <br />SOLID WASTE DIVISION PROJECTS AND UPDATES <br /> <br />1. OPERATIONS <br />• The Solid Waste Division’s Mass Notification System was effective as 09/01/20. <br />Residents may access the new system by links provided through QR codes printed on <br />banners at all SWD facilities, or through a link provided on the department webpage <br />at www.hawaiizerowaste.org. <br />• Non-HI-5 glass collection at the Volcano Transfer Station is no longer available. As of <br />09/03/20, residents wishing to recycle their glass may go to the Glenwood station, <br />which is open on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Fridays. <br />• SWD has continued the prohibition on commercial refuse going to the East Hawaiʻi <br />Sort Station. <br /> <br />2. ADMINISTRATION <br />Interviews are being held for EO-III positions at various baseyards. <br /> <br />3. SOLID WASTE CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS <br />• Work is wrapping up for the closure of the South Hilo Sanitary Landfill. <br />• Design work will begin for the second phase of the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates <br />Project. <br />• The environmental assessment for the closure of the South Hilo scrap metal site is <br />continuing. <br /> <br />4. RECYCLING SECTION <br />A. INTEGRATED SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT PLAN UPDATE: <br />• The 2019 update of the County of Hawaiʻi Integrated Solid Waste Management <br />Plan (ISWMP) is being prepared in compliance with Hawaiʻi Revised Statutes <br /> <br />
