PRIORITY #5: HALELUA <br />SUGG. 20-003 <br />(687 points out of possible 800) <br /> <br />Tax Map Key (3) 5-3-007:010 consisting of approx. 50.312 acres of the <br />Halelua ahupua’a in the District of North Kohala, Hawai’i <br />Anticipated Use <br />Halelua is familiarly known as Kamehameha I’s “stomping ground.” This land includes remnants <br />of Kamehameha’s use: O‘hau heiau; a terraced lo‘i; noni orchards, and other important cultural <br />sites. In addition, its shoreline is frequently used by the endangered Hawaiian Monk Seals. <br />Moreove <br /> <br /> With its stunningly beautiful recreation area, Halelua has pristine tide pools as well as <br />areas for shoreline and offshore fishing, cliff top hiking, and picnicking. <br /> The acquisition of Halelua would preserve traditional and current practices which include <br />fishing; hiking; surfing; and educational outdoor programs for youth. <br /> The abundance of native plants found at Halelua provides material for both medicinal <br />plants gathering as well as traditional hula halau gathering needs. <br /> <br />Significance <br /> Halelua geographically links preserved lands on both sides. <br /> <br />Kamehameha (Kamehameha’s Homeland), a four and a half mile stretch of coastline, <br />1.11 <br /> <br />
