PRIORITY #6: KAUPALAOA <br />SUGG. 20-010 <br />(671 points out of possible 800) <br /> <br />Tax Map Key (3) 5-8-001:010 consisting of approx. 62.623 acres of the <br />Kaupalaoa ahupua’a in the District of North Kohala, Hawai’i <br /> <br />Anticipated Use <br /> Current uses that will continue with a preservation purchase include a variety of <br />recreational activities including camping, hiking, walking, and fishing. <br /> Access to ancient and modern hiking trails. <br /> Access to a sheltered cove for launching canoes and small craft. <br /> <br />Significance <br /> Numerous and intact pre-contact cultural sites, comprised of six main clusters four ahu <br />and numerous enclosures, C-shapes, U-shapes. In all, there are 15 Hawaii Registered <br />Historic Sites, not including the Ala Loa trail. <br /> According to a 1979 Bishop Museum report, these pre-contact archeological sites are <br />valuable for testing the model of cultural transformation developed from pre-contact to <br />the post-contact settlements found in Lapakahi (an ahupua'a to the north). <br /> Preservation would create significant buffer between development along the South <br />Kohala Coast and the ocean along the more pristine North Kohala Coast. <br />1.13 <br /> <br />
