For the past several years, Hawaii County has had the highest percentage of traffic fatalities <br />per capita in the state (see Figure 1). The number of fatal traffic crashes on Hawai'i Island has <br />remained steady as Vehicle Miles Travelled across the state increased over the years (see <br />Figure 2). However, a significant reduction in traffic fatalities was realized in a corresponding <br />timeframe where Vehicle Miles Travelled dipped, showing a correlation between a reduction in <br />passenger vehicle travel and lives lost. <br />FIGURE 1.
