VULNERABLE ROADWAY USERS <br />Over the past seven years, people traveling by foot, bicycle, or motorcycle/moped have a much <br />greater likelihood of being killed than those in automobiles (see Figure 6). Pedestrians are eight times <br />more likely to be killed on Hawaii Island roads than drivers (see Figure 7). Hawaii has historically <br />reported a disproportionately high number of pedestrian deaths for elderly adults as compared to <br />national results'. However, results from Hawaii Island suggest that the percentage of elderly <br />pedestrians killed is roughly proportional to the percentage of elderly adults in the total population. <br />Map 2 identifies the location of each fatal traffic crash by mode between the years 2013 and 2019. <br />Map 3 identifies the location of these High Fatality Corridors and High Fatality Locations in addition to <br />the location of each fatal traffic crash by mode between the years 2013 and 2019. Communities of <br />concern, roadway ownership, and the location of available police stations and hospitals have been <br />delineated as well. <br />FIGURE 6.
