FATAL TRAFFIC CRASH FACTOR: PEAK TRAFFIC HOURS
Peak traffic hours are the periods of time where the majority of commuters are on the roads,
resulting in higher traffic volumes and congestion. During these periods, more vehicles are on
the road, however motor vehicle speeds are typically slower due to congestion. Details on the
time of day of the fatal traffic crashes shows that the highest number of crashes occurred
outside of peak traffic hours, specifically between 1-4 pm and 7-10 pm (see Figure 15).
Map 7 identifies the location of fatal traffic crashes that occurred during the AM and PM peak
periods. Communities of concern, roadway ownership, and the location of available police
stations and hospitals have been delineated as well.
IGURE 15.
