VULNERABLE ROADWAY USERS
Over the past seven years, people traveling by foot, bicycle, or motorcycle/moped have a much
greater likelihood of being killed than those in automobiles (see Figure 6). Pedestrians are eight times
more likely to be killed on Hawaii Island roads than drivers (see Figure 7). Hawaii has historically
reported a disproportionately high number of pedestrian deaths for elderly adults as compared to
national results'. However, results from Hawaii Island suggest that the percentage of elderly
pedestrians killed is roughly proportional to the percentage of elderly adults in the total population.
Map 2 identifies the location of each fatal traffic crash by mode between the years 2013 and 2019.
Map 3 identifies the location of these High Fatality Corridors and High Fatality Locations in addition to
the location of each fatal traffic crash by mode between the years 2013 and 2019. Communities of
concern, roadway ownership, and the location of available police stations and hospitals have been
delineated as well.
FIGURE 6.
