FATAL TRAFFIC CRASH FACTOR: DRIVER IMPAIRMENT
Driver impairment (alcohol and/or drugs) was a factor in 56% of all fatal traffic crashes on
Hawaii Island (see Figure 12). Of those fatal traffic crashes where alcohol and/or drugs were a
factor, speed was also considered a factor in 43%. Of the drugs identified in the system of the
drivers involved in fatal traffic crashes, the most likely types were stimulants (e.g.,
methamphetamine) and cannabinoids (e.g., marijuana) (see Figure 13).
Map 5 identifies the location of driver impaired fatal traffic crashes. Communities of concern,
roadway ownership, and the location of available police stations and hospitals have been
delineated as well
FIGURE 12.
