SPRINGER:Youre welcome and thank you. Commissioners any questions for the
testifier? Thank you. Maam if you could give us your name and address please?
KOOP:My name is Heidi Marie Koop, P.O. Box 486, Captain Cook, 96704. I
would like to ask the Planning Commission to grant Hualalai Academys request to the County
Council for further variance to increase the number of students at the Kealakehe campus. The
most important resource of the community is its children. Building a strong community and
offering a variety of educational alternatives in Kona ensures that the education is a bridge to a
future that supports a generation with the vision, with the knowledge, skills, and love for our
community. Hualalai Academy provides a very much-needed alternative educational
opportunity for the children in Kona. The growth of Hualalai Academy is a great benefit to the
entire community by providing educational diversity. As one of the founders of Kona Pacific
Waldorf School I strongly encourage each of you to vote for that requested variance. I also
wouldliketoreportthattheBoardofKonaPacificWaldorfSchool,whichoffersanalternative
school to 80 children has unanimously voted to endorse Hualalai Academys request to the
County Council for further variance. As a neighbor island administrator of child and family
service I can report that my contact with the public schools demonstrates on a daily basis how
overwhelmed the administration and teachers of the public schools are by the demands of the
variety of the families in this community. Alternative schools are necessity to support the health
th
and growth of this community. As a parent of a future 9 grader in the fall I ensure that the
families in Captain Cook who have their children attend Hualalai Academy will be a consorted
effort to carpool to help the traffic situation. We are very conscious about the needs of the traffic
in Kona. Thank you for your consideration allowing Hualalai Academy to offer our children the
much needed excellent education in Kona. Thank you so much.
SPRINGER:Youre welcome and thank you. Are there any questions from the
Commission to the testifier? I just have a question for the Director based on the testifiers
testimony that I would just like to clarify for all of us. Does this decision making- does decision
making end here or does it go on to the County Council?
YUEN:This vote is final here by the Planning Commission.
SPRINGER:So the vote today is the final vote on the matter. Just for that clarification,
itdoesnotgoontotheCouncil.Thankyou.Maamifwecouldhaveyourandaddress.
TOWLE:Goodmorningeveryone.ImGingerTowle.Myaddressis75-5788Nele
Place Kailua Kona Hawai i. My granddaughter has gone to Hualalai Academy since she was a
kindergartner; shes now a ninth grader. I wrote a letter in as a grandmother explaining the
excellence of the school and so forth but my appearance here to day is to support this and how
desperately this school is need and other schools of this caliber. And I was hearing little
rumblings about traffic but what you have to understand, people are going to drop their children
off at some school whether its up the street or around the corner and I think that we should
never, never hamper education because of traffic. We need to figure out how to calming for the
traffic or something like that. And if theres a couple of cranky old men my age just dont pay
any attention to them. Cause the last time there was some of this, and I thought this is ridiculous
EXHIBIT A
12
