D. ROY:Now, this area of Kuahewa, in which he called his, in pri <br />terms, taro land was really the mahiÒai that he was referred to in IÒIÓs book. MahinaÒai <br />means a garden of cultivation and it extended from Keopu to several ahupuaÒas but, down <br />the road, on to Keauhou and KahaluÒu. <br />M. ROY:Would that Kuahewa, that kÒele, be above this location that weÓre <br />talking about Keolonhihi? <br />D. ROY:It would be approximately and, itÓll be approximately in the 1,200- <br />foot elevation, from 900- to the 1,200-foot elevation. <br />M. ROY:Thank you. So are you presently involved with identifying sacred <br />Hawaiian properties that were negatively affected by development? <br />D. ROY:Yes, that is why the functions of Klana Huli Honua, that is to <br />resurrect our people to the values that possess in their tradition. <br />M. ROY:Thank you. Did you find that the pier in Kailua-Kona, in what is <br />known as a non-conforming structure built upon the area known as <br />sacred? <br />D. ROY:It is to my mind a disruptive fixture that has been introduced by the <br />State which must be eliminated in the future. <br />M. ROY:Did you find for the basis of your assessment, did you ba <br />portion or that, base your decision upon the writings of IÒI? <br />D. ROY:Yes. John IÒI describes the area such that the actual Ah <br />Heiau should have existed up to the point under the center part of the pier. <br />M. ROY:Thank you. This is entered for clarification and knowledge of <br />sacred properties, may I say. This is the linkage that I am trying to attain. Thank you. <br />Were you Chairman of the Kalae O Kamoa Study Advisory Commission <br />D. ROY:Yes. My contact with Keolonhihi and the surrounding vicinity <br />took place in the latter Ò70s; and I played an active part in community action that resulted <br />in the purchase of the area known as Keolonhihi, which I believe is 12 acres by the <br />State. And then following that, it led to a great deal more study about the surrounding <br />lands on the upper side. It was readily observed by me during that period that Keawe and <br />being of such an important figure in our traditional line-up of mÒ, KeaweÓs residence <br />and the KeakealaniÓs residence established a corridor along to Keauhou and beyond as <br />the royal area. It is a royal habitation from the time of Umi and before. <br />M. ROY:Thank you.
