things at Wal-Mart that people just throw the old thing away and then you have the overflowing <br />landfill problem. <br />And also there is a local survey, it was a survey of social indicators which shows that Hawaii <br />County has the lowest personal income and the highest percentage of people on food stamps in <br />the State already. We dont need more bankrupt businesses. We dont need Wal-Mart pushing <br />people into poverty. So I hope you will vote against superstores. <br />WATANABE:Thank you. Its a very thoughtfully written book. It <br />explains everything. It goes into the study; and I was impressed with how carefully and <br />thoroughly it was done. <br />DOMINGO:It seems like the effect of a store such as Wal-Mart or other stores just as <br />huge as Wal-Mart has garnered the attention of other places throughout the country and its <br />inherent problems that weve often heard of. And it seems because of that, theyve written that <br />book; and I think its a red flag for us to look at. If we, like in our case, since were <br />contemplating adopting the ordinances, Im glad that you brought that up and it certainly will <br />help me make my decision. I am here today because the ILWU Local 142 <br />is strongly opposed to the expansion proposal by supercenters such as Wal-Mart to develop <br />supercenters here on the Big Island. <br />Hilo has always been a small community that prides itself on its neighborliness. We know and <br />support our neighbors. Among our neighbors are Hawaiian grown stores like Sack €n Save, <br />Foodland and Longs Drugs that have been good to our residents, both for the goods they sell at a <br />fair price and the jobs they provide to local people. <br />When Wal-Mart first came to Hilo there were many who had apprehensions about a big box <br />store coming to our small community.
