I'm just contemplating whether we should <br />take a lunch break now or begin with their testimony. <br />SMITH:Go on. <br />GALDONES:Okay. We'll take whatever testimony we'll be able to until we break for <br />lunch. Mr. Eadie and Dr. Brock, could you allow room for the testifiers to come forward. No, wait, hold on. <br />the lady first, Geri. <br />BELL:Thank you. <br />GALDONES:We'll start with you. <br />BELL:Thanks for the opportunity, Mr. Chair and Members of -. <br />GALDONES:Geri, state your name and then your residence address, please. <br />BELL:Geri Bell, residence address 64-1054B Mmalahoa Highway, Kamuela. <br />I am Geri Bell. I'm the superintendent at Kaloko-Honokhau National Historical Park. The park <br />abuts the southern boundary of the proposed development and is over 1,100 acres in size, both <br />land and water. <br />The national park was established in 1978 to provide a center for the preservation, interpretation, <br />and perpetuation of traditional Native Hawaiian activities and c <br />and that of my staff is the protection of the park's cultural and natural resources, in particular, its <br />water quality. The park's massive fish ponds, Kaloko and `Aimak, and the ` fish trap <br />Ai'pio <br />illustrate ingenious Hawaiian construction and aquaculture techniques and provide wetland <br />habitat for endangered endemic Hawaiian birds, water birds, and the threatened green sea turtle. <br />While the park does not have concerns about this proposed project, has concerns about this <br />proposed project, we believe that appropriate conditions attached to the SMA permit can allow <br />for compatible development adjacent to the park. The element of this project that could have the <br />greatest potential impact on park resources is the golf course. Impacts may come from the <br />construction process, increased nutrients, pesticides, and other contaminants in the groundwater, <br />anchialine ponds and nearshore waters, increased groundwater salinity, and decreased levels of <br />16 <br /> <br />
