Cane Flumes, Flume cuts and shelves,and the"Cane Pit": Related to the industrial <br /> sugarcane milling complex was the method by which the cane was delivered to the Mill. <br /> - t <br /> Aa4 <br /> r <br /> 1611 <br /> �-�- <br /> _ <br /> PAPAIKOU MILL COMPLEX and FLUME SYSTEM (circa 1936) <br /> For most of its existence the harvested sugarcane from the fields of the plantation was <br /> delivered through a system of on grade water flumes. The hand cut cane pieces were <br /> bundled and placed in the flumes and they coursed their way down to the crushing <br /> plant. Being on grade and using water as the transport medium, the flumes were <br /> elevated over low spots and valleys, or they were `cut' into the ground to pass through a <br /> high ridge or other such elevated impeding height of land. The terminus of the three <br /> major flumes was the "Cane Pit" upon the subject parcel. The round concrete side and <br /> floor structure collected the cane prior to it being loaded into the cleaning plant and <br /> main delivery flume to the crushing plant. <br /> j <br /> .. <br /> c.;i Storage Pit with Craze-and Feeder Table in Operation <br />
