Need <br />Existing game management improvements, habitat management areas, and facilities require ongoing <br />repair and maintenance in order to provide the maximum opportunity for recreational hunting <br />B. Objectives <br />To operate and maintain buildings, structures, and infrastructure in 14 Public Hunting Areas (PHA) and <br />one Game Management Area (GMA), totaling 32,000 acres, to support wildlife management and wildlife <br />oriented recreation opportunities. This includes maintenance of: <br />• Baseyard buildings used to house equipment, staff and tools for operations <br />• Game bird guzzler units which provide water for game birds at Kuaokala GMA. Maintenance <br />includes the purchase of guzzlers, lumber, plumbinh, tools and fastners. <br />• Roads and trails will be monitored and maintained by staff to ensure public access to Hunting <br />Areas. Maintenance includes: Rental of Machinery, equipment to grub road/trail, etc. Purchase <br />of herbicides, power tools, equipment, surge/gravel, fill, etc. <br />• Signage will be inspected and maintained so information is disseminated properly to hunters <br />and other users in the areas. Includes -purchase of signs, posts, fastners, barriers, paint, <br />cement, lumber, etc. <br />• Cattle fences will be inspected and maintained to ensure cattle are restricted to paddocks <br />specific to grazing management objectives. DOFAW staff will work with ranchers to ensure <br />objectives are consistent with habitat management needs. <br />• Hunter Check Stations will be inspected and maintained to ensure that they are serving <br />as an effective structure to collect relevant information. Maintenance includes the <br />purchase of supplies: Lumber, mailboxes, fastners, sign in sheets, etc. Repairs and <br />maintenance to equipment, vehicles and tools <br />• Program to issue special permits to non -Public Hunting Areas. These are DOFAW lands <br />that have not been designated as PHAs. Permits are issued to allow for public <br />recreational hunting opportunities in these areas <br />C. Expected Results and Benefits <br />The wildlife management areas on Oahu are expected to provide approximately 3,500 hunter days of <br />recreation, resulting in a harvest of approximately 500 feral pigs, 200 feral goats, and 300 game birds <br />annually. Maintenance of access trails and roads provides a secondary benefit to non -hunting segments <br />of the public by providing access to hiking and camping areas. Maintenance of infrastructure, water lines, <br />fences are integral to continue to enhance habitat and game populations in Game Management Areas. <br />New areas accessible to hunting will also increase quality and quantity of hunter harvest on Oahu. <br />D.
