From: Judy Hall Jacobson
To: WPCtestimony
Subject: Punaluu resort
Date: Sunday,March 3,2024 10:24:58 AM
Judy Hall and Terry Jacobson
P.O. Box 6786
Ocean View, HA 96737
To the Windward Planning Commission,
We would like to voice our concerns should Punaluu, one of the few swimming beaches in our
area, is approved for development by BLACK SAND BEACH LLC (PL-SMA-2023-000046)
Punaluu is popular with locals and tourists alike. Development of 225 residential units and
peripheral buildings will make an already crowded beach much more crowded. Proposed
retail stores will take business away from shopping already available in Naalehu and Pahala.
Our main concern is when the next tsunami strikes. On November 29, 1975, an earthquake
occurred off the coast Hawaii Island. At Punaluu, buildings were swept off their foundations.
The newly constructed Punalu'u Restaurant, was flooded beyond repair. It's not if but when
another tsunami will cause as much if not more damage to this shoreline again.
We also support protection for the critically endangered Hawksbill turtle that nest at Punaluu.
For these and more reasons, we do not support this proposed development.
Sincerely,
Terry and Judy Jacobson
