From: Julian Frazier
To: WPCtestimonv;Council Remote Testimony
Subject: Public Hearing for Punaluu
Date: Monday,March 4, 2024 9:21:51 AM
To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing to advocate for the urgent need for Ka'u County to hold another hearing for
Punaluu on a Saturday to ensure that the working residents can effectively participate and
testify. As a member of this community, I strongly believe that every voice deserves to be
heard, and scheduling the hearing on a weekend would allow greater accessibility for those
who are unable to attend during regular working hours.
Furthermore, I am deeply concerned about the proposal to allow development that is not
coastal dependent in an already crowded area. Placing any structure within 200 feet of the high
water mark poses significant risks to both individuals and facilities, particularly in the event of
a tsunami. The safety and well-being of our community must be prioritized above all else, and
reckless development decisions could have dire consequences for residents and visitors alike.
In light of these concerns, I demand that Ka'u County implement a comprehensive shoreline
certification process for all proposed developments, especially in cases where there are plans
for facilities such as the Beach Club Cafe within close proximity to the beach. Such
certification would ensure that rigorous safety standards are met and that our precious coastal
environment is protected for generations to come.
I urge the authorities to listen to the voices of the community and take decisive action to
address these critical issues. Together, we can work towards a sustainable future that preserves
the unique beauty and safety of Punaluu for all who call it home.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
Julian Frazier
