APPROVAL OF WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS <br />Commissioner Kaoiwi moved to accept written communications numbers 02-76 through <br />02-82. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Bowles and unanimously carried. <br />CHIEFÓS REPORT <br />Chief Darryl Oliveira reported: <br /> Budget: For FY 2001 & 2002 not finalized yet; still in the proc <br />expenses; by the next meeting exact figures should be made available. <br /> Grants: Waiting to hear from USDA; possibly by August/September. HFD <br />purchased three seats for a grant writing workshop to be held from July 22 - 26, <br />2002. This is a worthwhile expense. <br /> Promotions & hiring: Experiencing glitches for inspector interview process. Position <br />descriptions have not been updated since 1979. Interviews are being postponed <br />pending position descriptions are current. Three candidates declined the interview; <br />leaving four candidates. Additional names are being requested. August 16 is the <br />anticipated target date. Every position within the department has a different position <br />description. <br /> Operations division: In June, large cash donations were received from Bureau <br />Environmental that will enhance current capabilities. <br /> EMS division: MICT class is continuing; presently in clinical phase. Candidates <br />doing well; target date of completion is January. <br /> Prevention bureau: Would like to expedite promotions for resources. <br /> Training division: National Fire Academy Training class Î certification as a safety <br />officer going on today. There has been good participation. Lea <br />training program with County of HawaiÒi Personnel Specialist Jane Larkin is targeted <br />to get officers trained re leadership and management, concepts, philosophies. <br />Mission and vision statements have been identified. HFD is one organization <br />sharing the same mission and vision. <br /> Volunteer division: Working on re-establishing the Fern Forest Volunteer <br />Association. There were some problems with two distinct groups of people. The <br />State has identified one group. There was some turmoil prior to this and some <br />people have given up. Doing active recruitment to re-establish this group. <br />Reminder Î Volunteer Firefighters Assoc. meeting coming up in HOVE. <br />2 <br /> <br />
