Testimony in Support of Saving Punaluu Beach from Development <br /> Aloha,My name is Kaila Ka'awa-Koi I stand here today as a kama'aina of Ka'u. I am here to urge the <br /> preservation of Punalu'u and its surrounding ecosystem from any form of development. Punalu'u holds <br /> immeasurable ecological,cultural,and environmental significance that must be protected for current <br /> and future generations. <br /> First and foremost,Punaluu Beach is home to a diverse array of native species,many of which are <br /> endangered or threatened.The preservation of their habitats is paramount to ensuring their survival and <br /> the overall health of the ecosystem.Any development would disrupt their natural habitats and <br /> jeopardize their fragile populations,leading to irreversible consequences for biodiversity in the region. <br /> In addition, Punalu'u plays a crucial role in protecting our watershed,fresh water springs,and coral reefs. <br /> The balance of these interconnected systems sustains life both on land and in the ocean.Any <br /> disturbance to this balance could result in devastating effects on water quality,marine life,and the <br /> overall health of the ecosystem.This is why it is very important to protect Punalu'u as a vital component <br /> of our island's natural infrastructure. <br /> I strongly believe the proposed development must undergo a comprehensive environmental impact <br /> statement(EIS)to assess the potential consequences on the surrounding environment thoroughly.An EIS <br /> would provide valuable insights into the potential risks and mitigation measures necessary to minimize <br /> harm to the ecosystem.Without a thorough assessment,we risk irreversible damage to the balance of <br /> Punalu'us ecosystem. <br /> Additionally, Punaluu Beach holds significant cultural importance,serving as a wahi pana for Kanaka <br /> maoli.It is home to kupuna burial grounds and cultural artifacts that must be respected and protected. <br /> Any development in this area would not only desecrate these sacred sites but also disregard the cultural <br /> heritage of our people. It is our responsibility to honor and preserve these cultural treasures for future <br /> generations. <br /> I will leave you with a saying that came long before me."You never bite the hand that feeds you"the <br /> preservation of Punaluu Beach is not just a matter of environmental conservation but also a testament <br /> to our commitment to respecting and honoring Punalu'u for all that it has given the people of not just <br /> Ka`u but Hawaii.
