Internal Recruitment: Internal recruitment examinations are scheduled <br />· <br />this month for Fire Inspector, Fire Captain and Fire Equipment Operator <br />positions. The applications will be processed and preparations for the <br />written exams and assessments will follow. Internal recruitment for <br />Assistant Fire Chief and Battalion Chief positions will close on <br />September 16, 2005; an assessment center will be administered to all <br />qualified applicants. <br />Commissioner Brazier questioned the number of applicants. <br />Chief Oliveira stated that certain positions have more response. Based on <br />the pool of qualified applicants there were 10 applicants for Fire Inspector; <br />approximately 20-30 applicants for Fire Captain; and 70 applicants for Fire <br />Equipment Operator. <br />Commissioner Browne inquired on the number of vacancies for Battalion <br />Chiefs. <br />ChiefOliveirastatedthatbecauseofthedepartmentsreorganization, <br />there was a total of six Battalion Operation Chief€s positions and one <br />Support Services Administrative Assistant Chief€s position. <br />Commissioner Browne questioned when the assessment center would <br />occur. <br />Chief Oliveira stated that it would occur the week of October 12. <br />Commissioner Matsuda asked what the Battalion Chief€s minimum <br />requirements were. <br />Chief Oliveira stated that there is a minimum of two years of service as a <br />Fire Captain. <br />Operations Division <br /> Brush Fires: Since the Lalamilo and Akoni Pule Fires, there have been a <br />· <br />number of critiques. Many comments were to be better trained with an <br />incident command system. The HCFD will provide training to the <br />Department of Public Works and some partner agencies. Also, <br />anticipating a partnership with the Department of Public Works on training <br />the Bulldoze Operations. This will include the ability to coordinate <br />firebreaks and manage heavy equipment. The State€s Division of Forestry <br />and Wildlife has administered classes in the past; therefore, the Fire <br />Department would like to arrange a partnership with them and provide <br />classes to private vendors. The department is committed to implementing <br />an incident command system for these incidents. This will involve having <br />5 <br /> <br />
