Scott Trefethen
2979 Kaiwiki Rd Hilo HI 96720
March 201", 2024
ATTN: WINDWARD PLANNING COMMISION
Dear Planning commission members-,
I am writing this reference at the request of Axel Kratel, who is applying for permitting to
operate a Bed and Breakfast facility on his property located at, 2893 Kaiwiki Rd Hilo, HI
96720.
Axel has a number of strengths I'd like to share. Since moving to Hawaii he has become
involved in community events including the air rescue of livestock animals during the
2018 eruptions here on the island. His farm raises goats for the production of milk and
cheese. He is an active member of numerous agricultural groups and societies. Mr
Kratel is currently exploring forestry practices by planting numerous conifer tree species
on his own land.
As a local farmer I can appreciate the difficulties in making a living off the land here in
Hawaii. The proposed permitting of the Bed & Breakfast on Mr. Kratel's property is one
of the intended streams of income he requires to make his farm financially viable. As an
experienced host, Mr. Kratel is more than capable of meeting the many and varied
needs of guests visiting our island.
As a neighbor Axel has always been responsive to my requests for assistance over the
years. He has been generous with his knowledge of plants and horticulture. I would
highly recommend the approval of this Guest Stay - land use on Axel Kratel's farm. It will
enhance the long term stability of the farm and provide a welcome venue to show
visitors our Hawaii agriculture in action.
Sincerely,
Scott Trefethen
