From: Kenwyn Enrioues
To: WPCtestimony
Subject: Fwd: Punaluu
Date: Tuesday,March 5,2024 2:37:08 PM
Dear Windward Planning Commission of the County of Hawaii,
I am writing to you as a concerned owner of Colony One at Sea Mountain Unit 11
regarding the proposed development at Punalu'u on the Big Island of Hawaii. While I
understand the potential benefits that new developments can bring to our communities, including
economic growth and enhanced infrastructure,I am deeply worried about the safety implications
of increasing the population in a recognized tsunami risk zone.
Punalu'u is renowned for its natural beauty and cultural significance, attracting visitors and locals
alike. However,it is also located in an area with a well-documented history of tsunami activity.
The risk of tsunamis in this region is not only a theoretical concern but a documented reality, with
past events causing significant loss of life and destruction.
Introducing more residents and visitors to this area through new developments without a robust
and foolproof safety and evacuation plan could potentially put many lives at risk. The safety of
our community members should be the foremost priority in any development planning. It is
crucial that we learn from past events and take proactive steps to minimize risk to human life.
Moreover, I urge the consideration of the environmental impact such development would have
on the unique ecosystems of Punalu'u. The beauty and biodiversity of our island are irreplaceable,
and once disrupted, may never be restored to their natural state.
I respectfully request that alternative sites be considered for the proposed development, ones that
do not pose a significant risk to human life or the environment. I also suggest that any future
development plans for Punalu'u include comprehensive disaster preparedness and evacuation
strategies as a non-negotiable component of their approval process.
I am aware that decisions of this nature are complex and multifaceted. However,I believe that by
working together,we can find solutions that promote growth and development while ensuring the
safety and preservation of our beautiful island and its communities.
Thank you for your time and consideration of this critical matter. I,along with many others in the
community, am eager to engage in constructive dialogue about how we can achieve responsible
and sustainable development in Hawaii.
Sincerely,
