From: Mary Christa Smith
To: WPCtestimonv; LPCtestimonv
Subject: Support stringent enforcement of short term rentals
Date: Sunday,May 5,2024 7:09:34 AM
Dear Planning Commission,
I write to you as a resident of Hawai'i Island.
I am thrilled with the passage of house bill 2919 and I ask that you make future determinations
about rentals and development in alignment with this bill. It takes courage and determination
over time to resist the allure of the powerful free market forces that would gut the housing
market in Hawai'i.
HB 2919 is good for Hawai'i in the short and the long term. Please aggressively regulate and
enforce STVR restrictions. It will be so much easier to do this now than to find yourselves
trying to mitigate and address the impacts that will come if such units are allowed to operate
outside of current designations. This is a huge win in solving the housing shortage for local
residents and it will take your commitment to do so. Realtors and investors should not have
the right to gut our communities and extract profit and the expense of residents. They will
always complain. Don't listen. I commend the Governor's and the legislature's courage to be
bold in restricting short term vacation rentals.
Kindly,
Mary Christa
Mary Christa Smith
She/Her
Follow on Substack
marychristasmith&amail.com
435-640-9189
