As a resident and active member of our community, I <br /> believe it is crucial to thoroughly understand the implications of such significant legislation <br /> before moving forward. <br /> The vacation rental industry is a vital part of our island's economy, contributing over $1.1 <br /> billion in economic impact. Given this substantial contribution, it seems inappropriate to <br /> regulate this industry without first conducting a comprehensive, independent, and <br /> academically rigorous economic impact study. During the Leeward Planning Commission <br /> meeting, Heather Kimball acknowledged the need for such a study, which I fully support. <br /> Given the complexity and potential impact of Bill 121, a point-by-point evaluation is <br /> necessary to ensure that all aspects of the bill are in the best interest of our community. <br /> However, with the current timeline, there is not enough time to conduct such a detailed <br /> evaluation. Therefore, I urge the commission to send the bill back with a recommendation <br /> to conduct the necessary study and re-work the language to address any identified <br /> concerns. <br /> Additionally, I request that a member of the vacation rental industry be included in the <br /> discussion when the commission engages in questions and answers. The lack of industry <br /> representation is a significant concern and contributes to the public's apprehension <br /> regarding this bill. Including industry perspectives will ensure a more balanced and <br /> informed decision-making process. <br /> Mahalo for considering my concerns and recommendations.
