DOC NO: 1508MV07
970 North Kalaheo Avenue Suite C-316 Archaeology
Kailua,HI 96734
Dear Ms.Okino:
SUBJECT: National Historic Preservation Act(NHPA)Section 106 Consultation—
Proposed VZW 1113 Paniolo Communication Facility
Waikoloa Ahupua`a,South Kohala District,Island of Hawaii
TMK:(3)6-8-002:031
Thank you for the opportunity to review the proposed undertaking that was received by our office on June 1,2015.
We apologize for the delayed review and thank you for your patience. According to your letter,Verizon Wireless
proposes to install a 60 foot monopole disguised as a palm tree with twelve 8-foot panel antennas mounted at the
top,and associated communication infrastructure.
T.S.Dye&Colleagues(Murabayashi et al. 2014)conducted a Historic Properties Assessment for this undertaking.
The assessment indicates that there are no known archaeological sites in the area of effect(APE),and that disguising
the tower as a palm tree minimizes any potential indirect or visual effects from this undertaking. A review of our
records confirms the absence of historic properties within the APE.
Based on the information provided, the State Historic Preservation Officer's project effect determination is no
historic properties will be affected.
Please contact Michael Vitousek at(808)652-1510 or at Michael.Vitousek@hawaii.gov if you have any questions
or concerns regarding this letter.
Aloha,
/104....... .. ...e.....
Alan S.Downer,PhD
Administrator,State Historic Preservation Division
Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer
