Nanue <br /> Stream Bridge is listed on the State of Hawaii Department of Transportation State Historic <br /> Bridge Inventory and Evaluation (SHBIE) (2013). <br /> Nanue Stream Bridge is listed twice in the SHBIE. The following is summarized from pages <br /> 6-11 and 6-149: <br /> Nanue Stream Bridge (Bridge Number 001000190308146)was constructed in 1952. It is <br /> a steel trestle bridge type with concrete open horizontal parapet/railing type, and it is <br /> listed on the Hawaii Register with a high preservation value. Its character defining <br /> features are: <br /> • One of six registered steel trestle bridges on the Hamakua coast <br /> • Uncommon use of steel material in Hawaii's extreme marine environment <br /> • Engineering significance of the trestle structure of the early twentieth century <br /> • Associated with the sugar plantation industry <br /> • Associated with the Hilo Railroad Company <br /> • Associated with three founders of the Hilo railroad company <br /> • See National Register of Historic Places Nomination Form in appendices <br /> • Associated with Post-War Hawaii Belt Road District <br /> • See Hawaii Belt Road historic context Chapter 2.5 <br /> Assessment of Effects <br /> Typically, bridge rehabilitation results in an effect in historic properties. However, we are <br /> implementing the following as mitigation to retain the original appearance and integrity of <br /> Nanue Stream Bridge. <br /> • Replacing in-kind steel truss members, bearings, gusset plates, nearly identical <br /> components to the original rivets, etc. that have corrosion and section loss; <br /> • Addressing spalls delamination in the concrete deck, bridge railings, column pedestals <br /> and foundations, such that the original characteristics are retained; <br /> • Cleaning and painting the steel members following the repairs to a near resemblance of <br /> the original bridge; and <br /> • Addressing scour deficiencies for the bridge foundations to maintain the original <br /> substructure. <br />
