From: Melissa Tomlinson
To: LPCtestimonv
Subject: Opposition of proposed development site 64-983 Mamalahpa Hwy in Waimea
Date: Monday,July 15,2024 12:15:07 PM
I am writing in today to oppose John Metzler's (Kaupulehu Development LLC)request to
rezone designated Agricultural lands to build a commercial complex. I urge the county not to
approve this conquest for wealth accumulation at the detriment of Waimea residents (and
honestly the interests of all Kanaka Maoli/`Oiwi in Hawai`i that have had their lands and
access taken from them via the illegal occupation by the United States military, government,
and settlers. All of which are war crimes). This development is unwanted in the rural
community of Waimea and would fail to protect prime agricultural lands. As someone who
does not live in Hawai`i, but fell in love with Waimea, the first place visited when arriving to
the island, I see this attempt as harmful to the community, further developing paradise into a
parking lot. Seriously, please don't approve his project. Consumerism is not a healthy way
forward for anyone and the county would be better served using the intended agricultural lands
for that purpose. The future that is coming for the next generations will be because of the
decisions of those in leadership today. Instead of creating for the purposes of capitol (greed),
create opportunities to keep the current community unified and protected with the best chances
for people to connect and work with the land. Even better would be to return the stolen land
with any fraudulent title to its rightful heirs, surely there are descendants within Waimea or
abroad that would be grateful for the reciprocity. I do hope for the opportunity to return
someday and if I do, I hope to still recognize the ever beautiful and bountiful Waimea. The
saying, "don't change Hawaii, let it change you" is coming to mind.
Sincerely,
Melissa Tomlinson
3160 Old Tunnel Rd.
Lafayette, CA 94549
(925) 917-1472
mel—tomlinson@ymail.com
