Veterans Advisory Committee <br />Page 4 <br />March 18, 2004 <br />Copies of Rule 7 -Rules Relating to Veterans Cemeteries will be distributed to Kona <br />members for information relating to items allowed at cemetery and family <br />responsibilities. <br />Les Chess, President of the Golf Course Superintendent's Association <br />Community Service Proiect at Veterans Cemetery III-West Hawaii <br />Mr. Highley reported that volunteers would like cemetery prepared leaving only the <br />gravestones in order for them to spray poison and kill existing grass and weeds, level area <br />and begin planting new grass (seashore paspalum). This type of grass is easy to maintain <br />and is planted at the Kukio Golf Course. Mr. Chess will also have the irrigation system <br />repaired by the initial installer and received permission from Director Engelhard to tap <br />into line and add a meter. He will ask developer to provide more than 3,600 gallons for <br />start up purposes. Hoping that cemetery will be ready for Memorial Day. <br />Director Engelhard had not yet received the request in writing. Peter Callahan reported <br />that he spoke to Les Chess and letter will be faxed tomorrow. <br />Canopy <br />Mr. Hanato reported that the temporary canopy used during burials at the cemetery was <br />destroyed during recent high winds. <br />Director Engelhard said they are looking for funding to replace canopy. She said that it is <br />almost the end of this fiscal year. If it cannot be done this year, it will be done in the <br />beginning of the new fiscal year which begins July 2004. <br />NEW BUSINESS <br />No New Business. <br />MEMBERSHIP <br />Chairman Kaoiwi asked about the status of vacancies on the committee. Director <br />Engelhard responded that we have not received a response from NG Retirees — <br />Mr. Segawa's organization. He can remain on board until a replacement is confirmed. <br />ANNOUNCEMENTS <br />JROTC Program <br />Mr. Callahan reported for informational puposes only that the high school JROTC <br />programs are hoping to institute a competition amongst high schools on the island and <br />eventually statewide. <br />Cleaning Headstones at Veterans Cemetery I <br />Paul Johnston reported that the Korean War Veterans will be cleaning the headstones at <br />Veterans Cemetery I on March 19th (tomorrow) at 8 am. <br />
