Veterans Advisory Committee <br />Page 3 <br />June 17, 2010 <br />REPORT OF THE DIRECTOR OF PARKS AND RECREATION <br />(Director Robert Fitzgerald on vacation) <br />Deputy Director Clayton Honma reported that the hours will change on timers for the sprinklers at West <br />Hawaii Veterans Cemetery III. Sprinklers will turn on in the evenings in the cemetery and during the <br />day on the hillside. <br />Deputy Director Honma said that we are still waiting for Willocks Construction to provide the name of <br />the flagpole manufacturer so we can order the ball for the top of the flagpole. Lastly process of edging <br />out and raising up headstones is almost complete. <br />Chairperson Fox reported that Director Fitzgerald sent a letter to families of Veterans Cemetery II that <br />are growing their own grass at the cemetery. Families have been informed if the grass has not been <br />removed by June 30th, P &R staff will remove it. <br />UNFINISHED BUSINESS <br />Veterans Cemetery III - West Hawaii <br />Reforestation Project <br />(Members reviewed May 17 and June 13 Reforestation Reports submitted by Dr. Richard Stevens) <br />Veterans Cemetery H — East Hawaii — Columbarias Site Selection <br />Chairwoman Fox reported that representatives from OVS, potential contractors and veterans met up at <br />the cemetery and decided to put the (9) columbarias like a spoke of a wheel around a culdesac. It will <br />look really nice and it will be made so that skateboarders can't get into it. She said we should be <br />receiving plans from the engineer soon. We'll circulate plans upon receipt. <br />NEW BUSINESS <br />None <br />EX- OFFICIO MEMBERS <br />Yukio Okutsu Veterans Home — Pet Therapy Program <br />Juan Babiak, Veterans Affairs Liaison Officer for the Yukio Okutsu Veterans Home shared that they <br />accepted a donation of a parrot and will be setting up a Bird Therapy program in compliance with VA <br />requirements for pet therapy. A policy will be set up and it should be ready to implement in a few <br />weeks. <br />
