From:maryellen tuttell <br />To:Correa, Charisse <br />Subject:Selection of New Hawaii Police Department Chief <br />Date:Wednesday, July 16, 2025 12:43:59 PM <br />To the Hawaii Police Commission: <br />My name is Maryellen Tuttell and I am a resident of Kailua-Kona. <br />I am submitting testimony today regarding the appointment of a new Chief of <br />Police. It is critical that our Chief of Police protect all Hawaii Island residents and <br />not participate in any actions that deny dueprocess to island residents. <br />Please ensure that our next Chief of Police does not cooperate with Immigration and <br />Customs Enforcement (ICE) any more than is absolutely required under the law. <br />ICE's terrifying raids, with unidentifiedmasked men grabbing people off our streets <br />violates due process and civil rights. Our residents are not safe when random <br />masked men can abduct people - anyone could (and has) dress similar to these men <br />and harass any of us. <br />Please ensure that the new chief understands that any cooperation with ICE should <br />be only what is requiredunder the law and that every resident's due process rights <br />are protected. <br />Please note that I endorse and support the testimony submitted by Kona Indivisible <br />separately. <br />Maryellen Tuttell <br />I believe the Kona police and the previous chief believed that ICE would be acting <br />constitutionally and with dignity, but they did the exact opposite. Thus, I hope that <br />any candidate for chief will already be against a MOU that unites our police force <br />with an evil, racist, authoritarian entity. Do not do it!!
