<br />Article 7. Veterans Advisory Committee.
<br />Section 15-61. Organization.
<br />The veterans advisory committee shall be composed of twelve members, who shall
<br />be appointed by the mayor, confirmed by the council, and may be removed by the mayor
<br />with the approval of the council. In addition, the Hawai‘i Island Veterans Services
<br />Counselor of the Office of Veterans Services (Department of Defense of the State of
<br />Hawai‘i) and the Director of the Department of Parks and Recreation, or their
<br />designated representatives, shall serve as ex-officio members of the committee, without
<br />the power to vote.

<br />Section 15-62. Membership and tenure.
<br />(a) The members shall serve staggered terms of five years.
<br />(b) Seven or more of the twelve members of the committee shall have served in the
<br />United States uniformed services; provided that the committee may still meet and
<br />conduct business if due to a vacancy or vacancies less than seven members have
<br />served in the United States uniformed services.
<br />(c) Initially, two members shall be appointed for a term of one year, two members shall
<br />be appointed for a term of two years, three members shall be appointed for a term
<br />of three years, three members shall be appointed for a term of four years, and three
<br />members shall be appointed for a term of five years.
<br />(d) Any vacancy on the committee shall be filled for the remainder of the unexpired
<br />term, but members whose terms have expired may continue to serve until their
<br />successors have been appointed and confirmed.
<br />(e) Members shall be eligible to succeed themselves for additional terms, provided that
<br />no member shall serve on the committee for more than three consecutive terms.

<br />Section 15-63. Meetings of the committee.
<br />There shall be a chairperson and vice chairperson of the committee who shall be
<br />elected biennially by the members from their membership. The chairperson shall have
<br />served in the United States uniformed services. The meetings of the committee shall be
<br />called at the discretion of the chairperson or at the request of the majority of the
<br />members of the committee with the time and place to be determined by the chairperson.
