Comm 26-039
From:Edward Johnston
To:PONC Testimony; Honokaa People"s Theatre; Tawn Keeney
Subject:Ka"awali"i Gulch Beach & Estuary Testimony
Date:Wednesday, March 4, 2026 8:06:01 AM
Aloha to the Public Access, Open Space, & Natural Resources Preservation
Commissioners,
I wish to support the County of Hawai'i PONC acquisition of Agenda Item b. Sugg.
26-02, Ka'awali'i Gulch, Beach and Estuary.
This is a remarkable place. A lost world charm. Lost also is the fact that the Ala Loa
Coastal Trail wraps, half moon through these lands and yet access along the trail
and beach here at KaÔawaliÔi are privately owned and gated! Construction of the small
house in 1992-1995 was somehow allowed over the historic Ala Loa trail,
likely forgotten. No Ala Loa or shoreline access of any kind was included in the
Conditions of building on this Conservation Land, for either the general public
or Native Hawaiians.
Add to that travesty the fact that even if the trail were recognized, access to the
stunning pebble beach would not be!
Ka'awali'i Gulch, Beach and Estuary is a magical place!--Ed Johnston, P. O. Box
.
